Radiant Skies: California Paintings by Frederick Wight

Under the inspired tutelage of Frederick Wight, the California sky has never looked so thoroughly or unapologetically radiant. The titles tell all: Looking West, New Moon Over Sierras, Western Sea, End of Day, Image of an Hour. The compositions capture the passage of time via the transcendent colors of the sky. The oil paint is applied thickly with a sense of joyful urgency and light seems to pour forth from the canvas itself. Though a New Englander by birth, Frederick Wight (1902 – 1986) came to Los Angeles, and the UCLA Art Department, in 1953 and remained here for the rest of his life. His accomplishments as instructor, curator, writer and driving force behind the UCLA Art Gallery, a forerunner of the UCLA’s Hammer Museum, are legend.

Billionaire philanthropist Eli Broad and the Broad Art Foundation unveiled architectural renderings for a new gallery showcasing contemporary art (which will be known as The Broad) planned for Downtown Los Angeles.

The site is across from the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), the blossoming cultural center of the city which has attracted $15.5 billion in private investment over the last decade.

"This has been some 40 years in the making," said Broad. Building is expected to start this summer for a 2013 opening date. The firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed the building.

A small San Francisco store and gallery, Park Life, was served a cease-and-desist letter from Jeff Koons's lawyers for selling a set of bookends that resemble the artist's large, metallic “Balloon Dog” sculptures.

The store removed the bookends from its inventory, posting on its blog, "...Jeff Koons owns all likenesses of balloon dogs.” A few days later, the bookends reappeared on the store's shelves with a note that they would be back in stock soon.
